An App For Volunteering

by Rachel Baker on July 3, 2014

GiveGab is a new app that sets out to connect you with the best volunteer opportunity for your interests.

This seems like it would be a great app for high school kids who have to do volunteer hours for a civics class or for college students who want to do community service to help beef out their resumes.

You use LinkedIn to find a job, Twitter to spread the news, and Facebook to connect with friends, but where can you post about and find volunteer work in today’s social networking era?

From Ithaca, New York, GiveGab has set out to increase volunteering worldwide by developing software and a social network that helps nonprofits, communities, and volunteers manage and promote their efforts. Beyond providing a listing of opportunities like Volunteermatch.org or LinkedIn’s volunteering site, GiveGab offers a social space, where people and organizations can connect and share.

On GiveGab.com or through the recently-released iOS app, volunteers build a profile. From there, you can search for specific nonprofits or opportunities based on interests. The site allows you to sign up online (or provides the organization’s contact information) and log hours after the fact, where you can share photos and reflections. These posts are visible in the site’s social newsfeed known as ‘The Gab’.
